“For every monster we put down, for every demon we exorcise, they just keep coming, feeding off of us, or on us.”

Someone… or something… is killing off the students of Converse High School.

Federal Agents Selina Wolfe and Martin Crowe are called in to investigate a series of bizarre deaths in a small rural community. What first seems to be a misadventure involving black magic and satanic ritual soon takes on even more deleterious overtones, as the agents become embroiled in a plot by a sinister cabal intent on unleashing Hell on Earth.

What they’re saying about Descendant:

“This is an extremly well written and crafted book, it is a great example of an author at the top of their game. Bob as grown and matured as an author, he has developed, for want of a better world, lyrical style, infusing the text with some great use of language, while at the same time never bogging the story down in over writing.” – Jim McCleod, Ginger Nuts of Horror

“Mister Freeman makes no attempt to dumb down his work. He uses eloquent words and obviously knows his occult material. There are times he makes your head spin with some of his references. However, this only gives his story more believability and credibility… I urge you to expand your horizons with what promises to be an exceptional series.”
- May/December Publications

“This is not a story with an occult theme; this is a fictional storyline based on Freeman’s detailed knowledge of the occult, with extensive terminology and background information. While this novel could be a stand-alone – no wicked cliff-hanger or blatantly open-ending – it is the first in a series, and I am looking forward to the sequel.”
- Ursula Raphael

“Bob (Freeman)’s imagination expertly fuses with occult wisdom to satiate anyone’s craving for a little blood (and) adventure.”
- Rue Morgue Magazine

“True Magick has meaning, holds power and can be felt… If this is your first taste of Bob (Freeman)’s brew, prepare to be hooked. Knowledgeable beyond my vaguest hoping in such lore, he’s never dull. Bob tells a story that draws one in to accept this reality…”
- Steven L. Shrewsbury, author of Stronger Than Death

Excerpt:
Tracy rose from her hiding place and climbed up the loose gravel to the eroded roadway. She was in shock. She’d heard every word the federal agents had said. Every last unbelievable word. She could hear their vehicle pulling away, and knew it was safe to return to her own investigation. Looking over the magic circles they’d pointed out, she made notes in her journal. She tried to concentrate, but her friend Sarah’s words kept coming back to her. They made a pact with the devil and now the Prince of Darkness was hunting them down. Try as she might, she couldn’t wrap her head around it. Tracy didn’t know what she’d expected to find out here, signs of drug use maybe, but this?

After taking careful notes and copying the symbols as best she could, Tracy slid down the opposite embankment and walked the edge, looking for any kind of clue that might have been left behind. The boy she’d heard talking to the agents had been on this side of the roadway, probably near the tree line, she deduced. She started out that way when a noise froze her in her tracks. Something behind her, she was sure, near the water’s edge. She fished inside her pocket and drew out her mace then resumed walking. Her ears were prickly, intent on any and every sound. Fear knotted up inside, and she felt a wave of dread and regret wash over her.

Why did I come out here, she thought. Why did she have to be so curious? Now it was something else Sarah had said that was foremost on her mind. ‘If you’re not careful, it’ll be you that gets ended.’ Tracy quickened her pace, stumbling along the loose gravel, heart racing.

Whatever was behind her was getting closer, but she was too frightened to turn and look. She started to move even faster, at last breaking into a run, heading into the woods. She had two options: scale the side and run on the road, or plunge into the forest. In the forest, she thought, she might stand a chance to lose whatever it was, but on the road, it would surely run her down, and then… And then… It was too terrible to contemplate.

Descendant Wrap
She could hear heavy breathing behind her, rhythmic and inhuman. In full panic she flung herself forward, but a jutting root caught her foot and sent her sprawling to the ground. Screaming, she frantically scrambled to her feet. To her left she saw something — a large opening in the ground. A cave? She raced for that shelter, confident she could feel the beast —for that’s what it was to her now — some type of horrid monstrosity hell-bent for her blood, hot on her heels. She imagined its savage maw and gnarled fangs nipping at her as she threw herself through the cave opening. Hitting the limestone surface hard, she spun about, spraying her mace in a frenzied motion.

She looked into the face of her pursuer, but it was not there. Nothing. Only the night, and the swaying trees, and the portal out from this natural shelter into the frightening world beyond.
